How Meal Plans Are Created

During a Consultation

After recording a consultation, ask the AI:

  • "Create a meal plan for this patient"
  • "Build a meal plan based on our discussion"

The AI considers the consultation conversation, patient health data, and any dietary restrictions discussed.

Via Patient Chat

Start an AI chat for the patient and request a meal plan. The AI will use the patient's health profile and any available lab data.

Using Templates

Meal plan generation follows your configured templates. Customize the structure and content through the Template Library.

Meal Plan Content

A typical meal plan includes:

  • Nutritional targets — Calorie goals, macronutrient breakdown
  • Meal schedule — Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks
  • Recipes and portions — Specific food items with serving sizes
  • Dietary notes — Allergies, preferences, and restrictions
  • Supplementation — If applicable

Meal Plan Generation Process

When generating a meal plan, Meelio:

  1. Calculates BMR and TDEE based on patient data
  2. Determines macronutrient targets
  3. Checks for medication interactions and safety constraints
  4. Generates a personalized plan

The AI may take a moment to generate meal plans due to the complexity of nutritional calculations.

Choosing What a Meal Plan Shows

You can choose which parts of a meal plan are included — on screen, in exported PDFs, and in copied text. For example, you can leave out calorie figures for a patient who shouldn't be counting calories.

Four parts can be switched on or off:

  • Nutrition summaries — Daily averages, daily totals, and the calories and macros shown for each recipe.
  • Insights and overview — The AI nutrition insights and the plan overview.
  • Recipe images — The picture next to each recipe. Turning this off makes exports faster and gives recipes the full page width.
  • Shopping list — The categorized shopping list at the end of the plan.

Note: Turning off Nutrition summaries doesn't change the insights text, which can also mention calories. Turn off Insights and overview as well if you want that removed too.

Your Default Settings

  1. Go to Settings → Meal plans.
  2. Under Content, switch each part on or off.
  3. Check the result in the PDF preview on the right. On smaller screens, click Preview.
  4. To go back to the original settings, click Reset to Defaults.

You can change the same settings without leaving a meal plan: click the Display options button in the meal plan's header.

Note: These defaults are saved on the device you're using. If you use Meelio on more than one computer, set them on each one.

Changing It for One Export

To change what goes into a single PDF without changing your defaults:

  1. Open the meal plan you want to export.
  2. Click the Download or PDF button.
  3. In the Export meal plan dialog, switch parts on or off for this PDF.
  4. Click Export PDF.

Editing Meal Plans

Click on a meal plan to open and edit it. You can modify content directly or ask the AI to make adjustments.

Approving a Meal Plan

A new meal plan is a Draft until you approve it.

  1. Open the meal plan, either in the chat where it was written or from the Meal Plans tab on the patient's page.
  2. Review it.
  3. Click Approve in the bottom toolbar. The status changes to Approved.

Approve appears once the plan is ready; a plan that is still being written cannot be approved yet.

If the plan is changed after you approved it — for example, you ask the assistant to swap a recipe — it goes back to Draft, so you can review the new version and approve it again. If the plan changed after you opened it, Meelio says "This meal plan changed since you opened it. Review it and approve again." and shows you the latest version.

Exporting & Syncing to EHR

Once approved, you can share the meal plan or document it in your practice management system:

Exporting as PDF

  1. Open the meal plan you want to export.
  2. Click the Download or PDF button.
  3. In the Export meal plan dialog, choose what to include (see Changing It for One Export).
  4. Click Export PDF and save the file for printing or emailing to the patient.

Note: Meelio formats the meal plan PDF to be professional and complete. To ensure no clinical or dietary detail is ever lost, Meelio does not cap or truncate lists in the PDF. Every ingredient, step of the recipe instructions, and shopping list item is fully rendered. If a recipe or shopping list is long, the PDF engine dynamically paginates the text and flows it across pages with a clear (continued) header, utilizing the full page width for continuation pages.

Syncing to Your EHR (Cerbo)

If you have Cerbo EHR connected, you can upload the meal plan directly to the patient's chart:

  1. From the meal plan view or consultation card, click the Sync to EHR button (up-right arrow icon).
  2. Select the meal plan from the list of documents.
  3. Select Attach as PDF to patient chart as the destination. (Note: Meal plans are PDF-only and cannot be sent via electronic encounter text notes).
  4. Choose whether to route the meal plan to the practitioner's Cerbo review queue, add any optional notes, and click Attach to chart.
